Transport for Wales is encouraging Wrexham AFC fans to tap into pay as you go this season as fixtures get underway at the STōK Cae Ras.
Introduced across North East Wales in May, pay as you go allows passengers to simply tap in with a contactless card or payment device at the start of their journey and tap out at the end using the same method.
TfW is working in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council and Wrexham AFC to introduce more fans to the scheme and show them just how simple and affordable getting to the match can be.
It's part of TfW’s wider ambition to make public transport more accessible, encourage sustainable travel and support the continued growth and success of communities across North Wales and the borders.
Alexia Course, Chief Commercial Officer at Transport for Wales, said: "Football plays a huge role in bringing people into Wrexham throughout the year.
“We want travelling by rail to be an easy, attractive choice for those journeys, whether people are heading to a match, spending time in the city centre or visiting friends and family.
"Working alongside Wrexham County Borough Council and local partners, we have a great opportunity to introduce more people to tap in and tap out, and help them discover just how simple rail travel can be.”
Councillor David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment said, “We’re pleased to be working with Transport for Wales and Wrexham AFC to make travelling to matchdays as straightforward as possible.
“Pay as you go gives supporters another simple and convenient option for getting into Wrexham, while also encouraging more people to consider public transport.
“With thousands of supporters travelling to the SToK Cae Ras throughout the season, making rail travel easier and more accessible can help reduce pressure on our roads and support more sustainable ways of travelling into the city.”
Tap in and tap out is already live across a number of North Wales stations, with more joining as the rollout continues. Fans must tap in and tap out with the same card or device for every journey.

Single leg pay as you go fares to Wrexham General start from:
- £1.70 from Wrexham Central and Gwersyllt
- £2.20 from Hope and Caergwrle
- £2.70 from Hawarden and Penyffordd.
An initial partnership between Wrexham AFC and TfW launched last year, prior to the rollout of TfW’s pay as you go service in North Wales, with a dedicated Advance Flex ticket offer for supporters travelling to home fixtures. The offer provided discounted rail travel with greater flexibility than a standard Advance ticket, allowing fans to travel on match days without the need to book a specific return service.
