Transport for Wales (TfW) is pleased to partner with Welsh Cycling as we look to get Wales enjoying the fresh air and riding their bikes for everyday journeys this summer.
The primary activation of the partnership is launching a new ‘FanZone’ active travel challenge – the #TfWPledge – where you take a journey by bicycle and share your experience on social media.
The aim of the challenge is to encourage you to leave the car behind and use your bicycle for everyday ‘purposeful’ trips. It doesn’t matter if it’s cycling to work, school, the shops or enjoying a summer ride to the park with your family – whatever the occasion, Welsh Cycling and TfW want to see your photos and videos to inspire others to do the same.
To enter is simple, just click here and you’ll find all the details. You could also ride away with some great prizes including a family set of Limar helmets from Welsh Cycling.
TfW is committed to supporting the Welsh Government’s vision of walking and cycling becoming the preferred ways of getting around over shorter distances for the people of Wales. Alongside greater use of public transport, fewer people using private cars and more people walking or cycling is a behaviour change imperative in responding to the climate emergency.
The body – set up by Welsh Government to change the way Wales travels – is working with local authorities and other key stakeholders to help deliver an integrated transport network across Wales, including providing support and advice to local authorities in the development and delivery of their active travel schemes.
It is also hosting a series of bike events throughout the summer across Wales and its border counties starting on Thursday 15 June (10am - 4pm) at Cardiff Central Railway Station, which are aimed at showing people the opportunities to cycle as part of every-day journeys.
TfW’s Head of Active Travel and Placemaking Matthew Gilbert said: “This partnership is an exciting opportunity to celebrate cycling. We want our future transport network to encourage more sustainable travel choices and contribute to a reduction in vehicle emissions; cycling and walking is at the heart of this.
"We also hope that as well as people taking part in the #TfWPledge that you will come along to our summer bike events across the Wales and Borders network where we will be showcasing local cycle facilities, such as cycle parking, across the network and we want to hear from you about how we – working with our partners – can make active travel your first choice for short journeys in your communities.”
Welsh Cycling’s CEO, Caroline Spanton said: “We are pleased to be partnering with TfW for this simple challenge. This is a great partnership for us as they share the same vision in helping and inspiring people to enjoy the outdoors and discover the wider benefits of using your bike for everyday journeys. It’s fun, keeps you active, reduces congestion and is better for the environment; by making smarter travel choices you are helping to do your bit.’

As well as providing advice and support to the Welsh Government, including assisting in the review of guidance associated with the Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013, in December 2020 TfW also became responsible for administration of the Active Travel Fund programme on behalf of the Welsh Government, enabling it to play a much greater role in supporting healthy and sustainable travel across Wales.
Local authorities are able to apply for funding through the Active Travel Fund (ATF) programme, via a combination of core funding and a competitive bidding process, to support the delivery of active travel schemes across Wales. Further information on the ATF programme is available here.
