A group of school children from three schools in Colwyn Bay have helped to brighten up their local railway station with unique pieces of artwork. 

The Transport for Wales station artwork project, in partnership with British Transport Police (BTP), asked 60 pupils between the age of 5 and 9 to draw their own train designs on separate tiles and those tiles are now displayed as 3 whole artworks at Colwyn Bay Railway Station. 

As part of the project Sarah Jones, Customer Service Advisor, visited Ysgol T Gwynn Jones, Ysgol Nant Y Groes and St. Joseph’s Catholic School, alongside PCSO’s Sue, Dan and Sophie, who also talked to the children about Railway Safety.  

Sarah Jones Customer Service Advisor, TfW said: 

"We started the process of replacing our artwork at Colwyn Bay Railway Station on 29 March by visiting three local schools. I had a wonderful day talking with the children and assisting them with them with their artwork.” 

PCOS Suzanne Hall added: 

“It has been great engaging with the children about Railway Safety and seeing them create their artwork to be displayed at Colwyn Bay Railway Station.  They can be proud of their work, seeing it every time they visit the station and use the railway.” 

The artwork is part of a phased Community Rail team station artwork refresh project led by the station team and is expected to be completed in summer 2023. The project focuses on artwork that reflects a sense of place and heritage of Colwyn Bay that can be appreciated by the community and visitors to the area. 

Melanie Lawton, TfW’s Community Rail Manager said: “The station artwork gives a sense of place and ownership to the pupils and communities it serves. The pupils and project colleagues and partners have done a wonderful job and the end results really brighten up the station for passengers and staff.”
