Children's Commissioner for Wales Sally Holland was joined by pupils from Ffynnon Taf Primary School yesterday (23 March) to launch Transport for Wales’ Children and Young People’s Charter.
The charter will put young people’s views at the heart of TfW's work to transform the transport network in Wales.
It will focus on the traditional barriers to young people using public transport, including cost, safety and access.
TfW has already introduced some benefits, including free travel for under 11s and free off-peak tickets for under 16s, when accompanied by a fare paying adult.
Sally Holland said: “This charter is a strong demonstration of TfW’s commitment to embedding the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) both today and in the future, and it was great to hear directly from the pupils of Ffynnon Taf Primary School who are truly inspiring and enthusiastic for sustainable public transport here in Wales.”
Pupils from Ffynnon Taf also took part in a range of activities which feature in TfW’s revamped Magnificent Train Journey education resource and explored the models of the new trains which are due to be introduced across the Wales and Borders network.
‘Inspiration’ is one of the pledges of the charter, so yesterday’s event also saw the relaunch of the Magnificent Train Journey education resource. The Magnificent Train Journey inspires young people to choose sustainable public transport options as their preferred way to travel.
Megan Roseblade of TfW said: “The Magnificent Train Journey is a fantastic learning resource for children, young people, parents, teachers, and guardians who want to inspire and learn more about sustainable transport.
“There are 23 activities across six lesson plans, making it easy to teach young people about their role in a greener future.”
Professor Sally Holland is one of a number of leading figures who are members of TfW’s independent advisory panel to help guide and scrutinise the organisation’s work.
