On Sunday 6 October, a staggering number of runners and spectators boarded trains to Cardiff for the 21st edition of the Cardiff Half Marathon.
The introduction of early morning train services, thanks to new agreements with train crew from June this year, made it easier than ever for participants to reach the starting line.
To accommodate the increased demand and ensure a smooth travel experience for all participants, Transport for Wales (TfW) introduced nine additional train services and nine additional rail replacement services. TfW also enhanced the staffing and security measures to provide a welcoming and safe environment for everyone.
The popularity of these train services was undeniable, as runners eagerly sought to secure their spot on the starting line. While the high demand presented some challenges in terms of capacity, the introduction of more new trains to the network later this year promises to alleviate these issues and provide a more comfortable and efficient travel experience for all.
TfW would also like to thank customers who travelled on the Merthyr, Aberdare and Treherbert lines into Radyr on bus replacement services, switching to rail services to travel into Cardiff as engineering works continued on Sunday 6 October across the Valley lines.
Over 30 pieces of engineering work were carried out during the nine-day rail closure, including the removal of the original Trefforest station footbridge, major track and signalling works through Pontypridd station and the installation of a new footbridge at Fernhill on the Aberdare line.
Cardiff Half Marathon organisers Run 4 Wales said:
“It has been fantastic working with Transport for Wales on the provision of extra trains for the Cardiff Half Marathon which were well used on the day of the event and we’re excited to see how we can build on this for next year.
“By encouraging more runners to travel by train, we’re making a positive impact on our carbon footprint and contributing to a greener event.”
Georgina Wills, Customer Delivery & Events Planning Manager at Transport for Wales said:
“This year we ran nine additional rail replacement services and nine additional train services from locations across the network.
“Runners using the rail network increased from 5% to 16% with all services heavily utilised, and this event provided us with valuable insights and allowed us to identify areas for improvement.
We will look forward to continue our partnership with Run 4 Wales and already look forward to next year’s event."
