Planning a mountain biking weekend this winter? Neath Port Talbot – also known as the dramatic heart of Wales – is home to some of the toughest and most scenic trails in the UK, carved out of hills which once bustled with coal mines and heavy industry. They’re full of drama, dramatic rides through beautiful, dramatic landscapes.
If you’re don’t mind a bit of wind and rain (or getting a bit muddy) you’ll soon find yourself peddling through wild mountain woodlands, past exposed rocky outcrops and along the rugged banks of fast-flowing streams and rivers. Mountain biking here can be a big thrill, however fast or slow you want to go.
When you stop for a breather, a hot drink or bite to eat, you can take a few moments to take in the beauty of your surroundings. You’ll see ancient forests, crystal-clear flowing waters and native wildlife.
From rail to bike trail
Our trains can get you (and your bike) to your starting point to begin your biking adventure in the Dramatic Heart of Wales.
Check out two of the most popular biking destinations in the region below. Many routes have been graded for difficulty so you can find a trail that best suits you.
Afan Forest Park
Afan Forest Park is regarded as one of the most exhilarating mountain biking destinations in the UK. It has six superb bike trails ranging in length from 5 to 27 miles. You’ll also find a bike park with some extreme gradients that’s not for the faint-hearted. Did you know Afan boasts more all-weather single track than any other mountain biking centre in Wales?
Two visitor centres, Afan Forest Park Visitor Centre in Cynonville and the Mountain Bike Centre in Glyncorrwg have cafés, bike shops and toilets.
Don’t bother fiddling with the bike rack – come along to Wales’ mountain biking capital by train. Bring your bike on-board and get off at Port Talbot Parkway. It’s not too far to cycle from here to the Forest Park, where you can really get peddling.
Mountain Bike and Cycling Trails

Margam Park has four marked biking trails which are colour-coded for difficulty. There’s something for all abilities from leisurely bike rides for all the family to steep climbs through rugged terrain and steep zig-zagging descents through dense forest, designed for experienced riders.
