06 May 2026

It’s National Walking Month, the perfect time to enjoy the great Welsh outdoors and get some steps in.

Whether you’re planning a walk in the park or a Wales Coast Path trek, here are some top tips to help you along the way.

Planning ahead

With National Walking Month being in May, we can hope for lovely spring sunshine. However, be prepared for temperamental Welsh weather. Bring layers, suncream and plenty of water to keep hydrated.

If you’re walking along sections of the Wales Coast Path, plan your route first. Check tide times, weather conditions, accessibility, and any path diversions.

Transport

The clues in the name. Transport for Wales is the perfect aide to your National Walking Month adventures:

  • Catch a train to Tenby and walk the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
  • Travel to the base of Pen y Fan on our TrawsCymru T4 bus
  • Book a fflecsi service to pick you up after a coastal walk on the Llyn Peninsula

Walking in Wales offers beautiful, unique ways to enjoy our country, and we’re here to help you along the way.

Remember to check timetables before heading out to make sure they align with your journey.

Dress appropriately

With warmer days, cool evenings and ever-changing weather conditions, layers are essential for National Walking Month. A base layer, long sleeve layer and waterproof layer are handy to have.

For shoes, comfort is key. Pick a trusty pair of footwear that makes you feel comfortable and supported to avoid blisters.

Food and drink

Whether you’re taking a homemade picnic or have a pub in mind at the end of your walk, keeping replenished is essential. Bring enough water to last the length of your walk and some snacks to keep energy levels up along the way.

Phone signal

If you’re planning a longer trek, you’ll likely lose mobile phone signal in some rural and coastal areas. Remember to charge your phone and bring a portable charger to avoid the battery dying late in the day. If you’re relying on digital maps, bring paper copies.
