Held annually, National Work Experience Week highlights the importance of work experience in developing and growing one’s career. It’s a fantastic way to learn about industries and roles that interest you.

Undertaking work experience will allow you to

  • Gain an understating of different job roles, and the paths required to enter that role
  • Gain hands-on experience in the sector
  • Meet new people and network
  • Improve future employment prospects
  • Decide your interests and what industries and jobs you enjoy

At TfW we offer a range of different work experience opportunities across the business. Louie Ball, aged 16, is undertaking a week work experience at our Canton Depot which looks after the maintenance of our trains from across the network. Currently studying his Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering at Coleg Y Cymoedd, Louie wanted to carry a placement during his half term to put his current skills into practice, as well as gain insight into the engineering industry.

Louie Ball - work exp-3

Louie said: “I visited TfW back in the summer for a 3-day placement to gain an insight into engineering in the rail industry, which urged me to sign up to an Engineering course in college. I had a great time and knew I wanted to come back to learn more. It has been a fantastic week at Canton depot, and I’ve completed a huge variety of tasks from mechanical work including engine checks, brake testing and pneumatic faults, to electrical work such as carrying out a new battery testing procedure. The technicians have all been welcoming and have given me a great insight into the maintenance on the trains. I’ve been able to see both the older trains, as well as the new Class 231 trains. My goal in the future is to pursue a career in engineering via an apprenticeship, and hopefully join the rail industry!”
