At TfW we have set ambitious goals to support the Welsh’ Governments’ 2050 net-zero targets and work collaboratively to achieve net zero carbon public sector in Wales by 2030.

How we choose to travel, whether for work, to the shops, or to see friends and family, is one of the biggest day-to-day climate decisions we face. In 2020, transport produced 24% of the UK’s total emissions. The majority (91%) of emissions from domestic transport came from road vehicles with the biggest contributors being cars and taxis.

Following last week’s Cop27 in Egypt, and this week’s Wales Climate Week, we look at how as individuals we can make greener transport choices, and how as an organisation TfW is working to reduce our carbon footprint, ensuring climate resilience.

Creating a more sustainable network

At TfW we have set ambitious goals to support the Welsh’ Governments’ 2050 net-zero targets and work collaboratively to achieve net zero carbon public sector in Wales by 2030.

We’re working to decarbonise our network and reducing our impact on climate change. Our work includes:
  • Electrifying 172km of track
  • Introducing new rolling stock
  • Encouraging more sustainable modes of travel
  • Helping to build better, more accessible active travel routes with our partners
  •  Development of the South Wales Metro
  • Installation of electric vehicle charging points in new car parks
  • 100% of electricity procured from renewable sources
  • Installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on 20 station buildings.

Our Climate Change Adaptation Plan that will be published early next year provides a roadmap for building resilience within TfW. We will soon be conducting comprehensive Climate Change Risk Assessments (CCRA) across our networks, operations, and services, including CVL assets, buses and the new South Wales Metro.

Travelling greener

There are many simple ways you can reduce your transport carbon footprint. Try cycling or walking for part of your journey, or to your nearest station. Many of our stations provide bicycle spaces so you can leave your cycle and continue your journey by train or bus.

Catching the train or bus is a great way for you to take back your mornings and take a little time for yourself. Enjoy listening to your favourite podcast (have you tried Just the Ticket?), reading a book or simply enjoying the rugged landscape of Wales. Using public transport reduces road congestion, traffic noise and helps to reduce emissions from road traffic.

Looking for a day out with a difference? Leave the car at home and take in the stunning views of Wales on one of our scenic railways. With the Heart of Wales line running through dramatic mountains, forests and wild rivers, or the coastal and relaxing Conwy Valley line, there are many journeys to choose from and many towns and villages to explore along the way.

By thinking differently, and making small changes to our daily routines, we can all make a huge difference to the impact we have on our planet.
